If it is not treated, cholecystitis can lead to complications, some of which can be life-threatening. In this article, we look at acute cholecystitis, what it is and when to call our Home GP Service in Costa Del Sol for acute cholecystitis.

What is Acute Cholecystitis?

Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder. The gallbladder is an organ located on the right hand side of the abdomen and it’s small and pear-shaped. Found below the liver, the gallbladder contains some digestive fluid that is released into your small intestine. Gallstones can block the tube that comes out of your bladder, and it’s this that can cause cholecystitis. When this happens, bile is built-up and it causes inflammation. Some causes of cholecystitis include tumours, some infections, some illnesses, and bile duct issues.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of cholecystitis can include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Pain that has spread to your back or right shoulder
  • Severe pain in the centre of your abdomen or the upper right area
  • Tenderness in your abdomen when you touch it
  • Vomiting

Cholecystitis symptoms can occasionally be experienced if you have eaten a fatty or large meal. Call our Home GP Service in Costa Del Sol for acute cholecystitis if you are concerned about the symptoms you are experiencing.

Causes

Cholecystitis typically occurs when there is inflammation of the gallbladder. The inflammation can be caused by:

  • Bile Duct Blockage – Scarring or kinking can cause blockages
  • Blood vessel issues – Serious illnesses can damage the blood vessels resulting in a decreased blood flow. This can lead to cholecystitis
  • Gallstones – This is often the cause of cholecystitis and results in hard particles developing in the gallbladder. Gallstones can potentially block the cystic duct causing a build-up of bile and inflammation
  • Infection – Some viral infections and AIDS can cause the gallbladder to become inflamed.
  • Tumours – A tumour could prevent the bile draining out of the gallbladder correctly. This can cause a build-up of bile which could lead to cholecystitis
